MSN - It may seem like a cliché but Alaska really is the perfect place to witness the northern lights, or aurora borealis. Head to Fairbanks, where the phenomenon can occasionally be witnessed between August 21 and April 21 because of the city’s location under the “auroral oval” and its consistently clear skies. Bright green, teal and white lights swirl around the sky, sometimes with a purple or magenta edge, taking on different shapes and lighting up the night.
