Northeast Ohio Opens the Door to Fresh Food Options

Northeast Ohio Opens the Door to Fresh Food Options Greenfield Berry Farms

Want to eat right? Want to grow it yourself? Want to buy locally? Living here in Northeast Ohio opens the door to many such options!

Farmers markets are too numerous to mention, and a fun way to shop. Just Google “local farmers markets” to see! Another healthy option is to order a CSA (Community-supported Agriculture). Farmers grow a wide variety of vegetables in a natural, sustainable way and then pick them at the peak of flavor and nutrition. The community supports local farmers by purchasing a share of the harvest, a CSA, which is provided on a weekly basis. Community and farmers share the risks and benefits of delicious local foods. Greenfield Berry Farms, for example, offers one in Peninsula with delivery options available. Please visit www.greenfieldberryfarm.com.

Community Gardens: Both Summit and Portage counties have excellent community garden options for low to no cost. Private and organization-related gardens thrive, especially associated with charitable aims. City gardens are available, and many plow the land, add compost, provide a water source, seeds or plants AND master gardener courses or similar gardening advice.  Community gardens are a great way to learn and share gardening information and enthusiasm. Stow has one. Seek a plot with your city or contact the Kent Garden Club for a plot in Streetsboro. Visit www.gardenclubofkent.org. Akron Residents can contact Akron Grows Kurt Mulhauser at (330)-375-2090, This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

Let’s Grow Akron is equipped to implement and teach the full spectrum of reclaiming urban land for food production. Over 50 sites for growing are tilled this year! Enjoy the fruits of your labor with neighbors and learn about gardening and diet too. Let’s Grow also offers free classes on food preservation/canning, and related topics, http://letsgrowakron.org/about.html.

Bon appetite!
